Why do people rally against genetic modification?
It would seem they are against bringing genes together to create something better. When scientists do this in the controlled environment of a lab they call it unethical.
Making babies always involves bringing genes together. Procreation by means of sex is nothing but a random form of genetic manipulation. The resulting children are seldom better than the parents. This is why evolution is so slow. After all the chance of survival only increases in the odd case that the offspring is better than its ancestors. The improved have a better outlook. The survival of the fittest.
People seek the perfect partner, they hope to have perfect children, but there’s no controlled environment, just the luck of the draw. What’s ethical about that?
If the object of the protests is that we should let nature take its course then haven’t we lost track?
Most of us would not survive in nature. Instead of dying because we can’t cope we’ve created a different world. A cultured landscape. Technological development. Advanced medical science.
We no longer need to be fit and strong and healthy and smart. The weak and ill and stupid survive and procreate. This is evolution going backwards. Our species will degenerate. In a few million years we will have de-evolved to ostriches.
We’re already sticking our heads in the sand.
